GEORGE TOWN: The suspect wanted for the brutal killing of four family members in Batu Maung near here on Wednesday was shot dead about 7.05pm today.

The suspect, identified as Chung Chun Wah, 32, was shot in front of a souvenir shop near the Kek Lok Si Temple during an exchange of fire with police after he was cornered.

Penang CID chief, Datuk Razarudin Husain said acting on a tip-off, a police patrol car noticed the suspect behaving suspiciously in a parked car.

When they approached the suspect, he opened fire.

He was later shot dead following the shoot-out with about 15 policemen who arrived at the scene. He was killed on the spot.

Razarudin said police recovered a 9mm semi-automatic at the scene which they believed was the same weapon he used to kill the family members.

"We found the suspect's identification card on him and with this we consider this case solved," he said.

The suspect was wanted for killing Toh Hock Choon, 50, his wife Tan Saw Sim, 55, their stepson Chung Wah Tong, 28, and the latter's son, identified only as Ah Bee.

Police, who received a report at 2.55am on Wednesday, found 11 bullet casings at the scene and based on a CCTV recording, all the victims were shot at close range.

Razarudin said the suspect is believed to have entered into an argument with the family when they refused to give him money for drugs.

The man, believed to be high on drugs, later returned with the 9mm semi-automatic pistol and fired 11 shots at the victims before fleeing in a Toyota Hilux belonging to Toh. The vehicle was later found abandoned at Kampung Baru, Bukit Mertajam.

"Toh was shot in the arms, hands, face and chest. We believe that he was either sitting or kneeling when he was shot," said Razaruddin.

Workers at the nearby poultry processing plant, which the victims owned, notified the police after hearing noise from the house made from converted cargo containers.

According to Razaruddin, the suspect has several past records involving drugs and weapons possession and used to sell chicken at the Air Itam market.

M. Latha was hoping to see her only daughter R. Mythurai, 23, at their family home in Johor Baru for Deepavali in October.

She was instead left in tears as she identified Mythurai’s body at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital mortuary yesterday.

“She speaks to me daily over the phone and even sends her pictures through WhatsApp. I am lost without her,” said the 46-year-old pre-school teacher.

Mythurai, a cashier at Destiny Club, was slashed to death at the entertainment outlet on Wednesday.

Latha described Mythurai as the “family’s biggest hope”. She added Mythurai dreamt of being a doctor to lift her family out of poverty.

“She last spoke to me on Wednesday afternoon and she promised to return for Deepavali.

“I received a phone call at 11.15pm the same day and was told of the incident.

“I reached the hospital at 4am but was not allowed to see her as medical personnel said doctors were trying to revive her. After waiting for about an hour, I was told she was no longer with us.”

“She was a bright student in school and a very obedient girl. She came to Kuala Lumpur in 2012 to pursue her studies in medicine. But the family was financially constrained and she could not continue her studies and found a job instead,” said Latha.

“She was supposed to continue her studies next year.”

Latha said she knew the club owner and thus allowed Mythurai to work there.

A victim of the attack, who requested anonymity, said he heard a commotion outside the club at about 10.30pm.

As he rushed out of the club, he saw three men armed with machetes attacking two men who were lying on the road in a pool of blood.

“I wanted to leave the club. The suspects thought I was going to attack them and they attacked me,” he said, adding the last two fingers on his left hand were severed after he tried to defend himself.

“I am close to Mythurai. I’m here to see her,” he said, adding he was a regular patron of the club.

“I really do not know why they had to kill her. She is one of the nicest person I know,” he said.

In Kuala Lumpur, traffic is reported to be slow along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim from Semantan towards the Duta tunnel. Traffic is also slow on Jalan Tun Razak from Ampang Park towards the RHB building.

Congestion along the Federal Highway has also been reported from the Jalan Templer intersection to the LDP interchange, while the Kesas Highway is backed up from Seafield to Hicom.

Klang fire not caused by car bomb, state rep says after ‘mischievous’ online rumours

KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — Pictures circulating on social media of a huge cloud of smoke at a shoplot area in Andalas, Klang was the result of a fire and not a car bomb as claimed by some people online.

Seri Andalas assemblyman Dr Xavier Jeyakumar, who visited the scene of the incident, said that the rumours were works of “mischievous parties.”

“I was in the area and I spoke to the Fire and Rescue officials and also the forensic team there. What happened was there was a fire in a shoplot there,” he told Malay Mail Online.

“Because the shop has plastics and styrofoam, the fire became really bad and raged outside, affecting five cars which were totally burnt,” he added.

No casualties were reported from the incident.

The rumours began spreading just as Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that last week’s grenade attacks at a nightclub in Puchong that injured eight people is linked Islamic State (IS) terror group.

Suicide Bombing In Arab Saudi

JEDDAH: Suicide bombers blew themselves up in Qatif and Madinah after sundown on Monday, several hours after Saudi security officers foiled an attack near the US Consulate in Jeddah.

In Madinah, a bomb exploded in the vicinity of a police post outside the Prophet’s Mosque, killing four policemen and two civilians, reports said.

A police source told Arab News that the officers manning the post were having their iftar meal when the suicide bomber struck.

                                             

The bomber reportedly asked to join the policemen in having iftar and he was welcomed. As soon as he got near, he exploded his suicide vest.

A video circulated on social media showed a car burning and at least two security officers were seen lying on the open ground and two others lay crumpled near a burning car.

Security forces have cordoned off the Prophet's Mosque and worshippers were not allowed to get in or out.

Madinah Governor Prince Faisal bin Salman arrived at the blast location and visited Al Ansar Hospital where the victims of the blast are being treated.

In Qatif, a governorate in the Eastern Province, two suicide bombers blew themselves up one after the other outside the Faraj Al-Omran Mosque. No casualties were reported.

The number of fatalities reported does not include the three suicide bombers.

                                         

Earlier Monday at 2:15 a.m., a suicide bomber blew himself up near the US Consulate when security officers confronted him as he moved suspiciously at a parking lot of the Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital.
Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, spokesman of the Ministry of Interior, said the bomber, in his 30s, was identified as an expatriate from the United Kingdom.
Photos taken from the scene showed the bomber’s body partially dismembered by the blast.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks so far. Previous mosque attacks in the past months in the kingdom have been claimed by Daesh militants.

                                             

Police Confirms IS Involvement In Movida Bombing and Hunting for Suspects

Terrorism rears ugly head in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA —  In a swift counter-strike, police arrested 15 suspected Islamic State (IS) militants, including two cops, in connection with the recent grenade attack at the Movida Kitchen Bar and Club Lounge in Puchong Jaya last Tuesday.

They also seized an assortment of weapons, IS-related literature and other paraphernalia.

Counter-terrorism specialists, who have now widened their net to bring in more suspects, also disclosed that a Malaysian masterminded the June 28 attack which left eight people injured and several others traumatised.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar identified the mastermind to be 26-year-old Muhammad Wanndy Mohamad Jedi, who remains at large in Syria, and is reportedly linked to the beheading of a foreigner, purportedly a spy, there.

Khalid’s disclosure yesterday affirms Malay Mail report following the blast attack at the lounge which highlighted the IS link.

The police crackdown, which took place in the Klang Valley and northern states, began days after the incident and continued until last weekend. All those detained were between 19 and 52 years old.

Last Friday, two factory workers were detained in Port Klang after investigations revealed they were individuals who hurled the hand grenade at the lounge.

“The two had received instructions from Muhamad,” Khalid told a press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday.

Police are now looking for Md Saifuddin Muji, 28, and Jasanizam Rosni, 33, both believed to be senior IS members here.

Khalid urged the public to come forward should they have any information on the terror group and also on the whereabouts of the wanted duo.

Police warned that more attacks had been planned, and assured police were on heightened alert.

“These militants were directed by Muhamad to attack our prime minister, high-ranking police officials and other entertainment outlets.”

On the involvement of the cops with the terror outfit, Khalid said the two were attached with the Kedah police contingent.

“One was to protect a senior IS member from being arrested, while another was to raise funds for IS terror activities by committing robberies in the city.”

Investigations also revealed the hand grenade used in the attack was one similar to that used for military training and believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country.

On June 29, Malay Mail front-paged that police were probing terrorism links for the attack after a man, pledging allegiance to IS, claimed responsibility.

The said individual in the Facebook post said the attack was in retaliation to social activities held during Ramadan, and was believed to have been uploaded by Muhamad using Abu Hamzah Al- Fateh as his Facebook identity.

Khalid reiterated his previous proposal to the government to place all entertainment outlets in one area for security reasons.

“Clubs and pubs are everywhere. It is hard for us to keep an eye on each one of them. If they were gathered in one area, it would be easier for us to carry out our duties and prevent such incidents.”

Solidarity Walk With Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng

GEORGE TOWN: The national opposition is sensing a snap election after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was charged with graft and abuse of power last Thursday at the Penang High Court.

This feeling was picked up by speakers during a ceramah at the Dewan Sri Pinang today with most alluding to an early 14th General Election.

Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy started the ball rolling when he said morale was high among the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government following victories in the Sarawak state election and the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangasr by-elections.

"The people will decide in the next general election, I feel Penang will remain with Pakatan Harapan (PH)," he said as more than a thousand strong crowd cheered at the Dewan Sri Pinang today.

Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Rashid Hasnon also did not miss a beat when he forecast PH winning 80% of the Penang votes if the election was called.

"We won 52% of the popular vote in 2013," he noted while Parliamentary Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail urged PH supporters to go to the ground to win the fence sitters.

"We can talk to the converted but we need to convince the others," the PKR president said.

Parit Buntar MP and Penang Amanah chairman Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa meanwhile got the crowd roaring in agreement after noting Lim still commanded the support of the public despite facing graft accusations.

"I have seen many who have been charged with corruption and abuse of power and not one of them have been able to raise money from the public for bail," he said.

Lim himself did not discount the possibility of early national polls, saying that the people will have to decide.

"It is up to the people to answer in the next general election," he said when asked in an ad-hoc press conference after
the ceramah.

Earlier in the morning, the commercial district in Lebuh Pantai here reverberated with shouts of "Lim Guan Eng" as thousands gathered for a solidarity walk with the chief minister.

Among those who walked was businesswoman Asma, 46, who said she wanted to show her support for Lim's government.

"There is no need for him to step down," she stressed when asked if Lim needed to take leave until the trial ends.

Another supporter, Khor See Beng, 55, laughed off the accusations.

"I support him as CM, I support his leadership," the voter from the Air Putih constituency, where Lim is assemblyman said.

Also among them was Harnik Kaur, 50, who was with her family of seven from Butterworth.

"We are behind him, we will not let him down," she said.

High Court set bail at RM1 million for Lim Guan Eng

The High Court set bail at RM1 million for Lim Guan Eng this afternoon after the Penang chief minister claimed trial to two corruption charges.

After his plea was recorded, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, who led the prosecution team, proposed the bail sum and asked that Lim be compelled to inform the court if he planned to travel abroad.

During mitigation, Lim’s lead counsel Gobind Singh Deo requested for the accused to be allowed to inform the court and the AG’s Chambers of this travel plans two days before departure.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Azmi Ariffin granted the request and agreed not to impound Lim’s passport, also setting bail at RM1 million with one surety.

In the case of businesswoman Phang Li Koon, who also claimed trial to her charge, Apandi asked for bail to be set at RM200,00 with one surety and no additional conditions, which the court allowed.

Azmi later fixed September 22 for case management in chambers for both cases.

Lim and Phang are facing charges over an allegedly corrupt house purchase deal they struck last year.

Lim is facing two charges ― one under Section 23 of the MACC Act and another under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

He is accused of using his public office or position to obtain gratification for himself and his wife, Betty Chew, by approving an application by Magnificent Emblem to convert agricultural land to residential purpose during a state planning committee meeting on July 18, 2014.

Section 23 carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and a fine of five times the value of gratification or RM10,000 whichever is higher.

In the Penal Code charge, Lim is alleged to have used his position to obtain gratification by purchasing his house from Phang at RM2.8 million, which was below the property’s market value of RM4.27 million on July 28, 2015.

The second offence is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, and forfeiture of property upon conviction.

Rare Arrest of a sitting Chief Minister on Graft charges

MACC yesterday Electrified the country by making a rare arrest of a sitting chief minister on graft charges.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, a leading opposition figure, was flanked by about a dozen Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officials and plainclothes policemen as he was escorted out of his office, with dozens of journalists swarming the place.

The arrest followed three months of accusations by Umno leaders that Mr Lim had benefited in buying his bungalow on Pinhorn Penang island from businesswoman Phang Li Koon, and that she was allegedly involved in business deals with the Penang state government that he leads.

The 55-year-old is secretary-general of the (DAP), the most popular ethnic Chinese party in Malaysia. The DAP won 38 seats in the federal Parliament in the 2013 General Election, forming the second-largest single bloc of MPs after Umno's 88 seats.

The crowd of supporters that started arriving in small groups at 7.30pm has now swelled to over 200.

They started chanting “Bebas Guan Eng” at 9pm while some carried handwritten placards calling for Lim’s release.

GEORGE TOWN  - Penang CM Lim Guan Eng has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission

The secretary general of Democratic Action Party (DAP) was arrested as he exited the conference room at 6.20pm on Wednesday (June 29) in Komtar after chairing the state's weekly exco meeting.

Five to eight plainclothes men were seen escorting Lim in a private lift from Level 28.

"The charges are under Section 23 and Section 165 of the Anti-Corruption Act.

"The first charge is about the re-zoning approval of Magnificent Emblem's application to convert agricultural land to residential.

 

Lim's purchase of the RM2.8 million (S$938,000) bungalow on July 28 last year was also linked to the state's sale of state land in Taman Manggis to Kuala Lumpur International Dental Centre (KLIDC), the New Straits Times reported.
