Real Estate Agent Shot to Dead 6th July 2016

The Star - A real estate agent was shot dead at close range by two unknown assailants on a motorcycle while driving her luxury MPV in Taman OUG here.

Her eight-year-old daughter, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was also shot and is in critical condition.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Rusdi Mohd Isa said the incident occurred at 2.28pm on Wednesday along Jalan Hujan Mas.

“We rushed to the scene and found the woman’s body motionless in the Toyota Vellfire.

“Based on our investigations the victim had come out to eat at a restaurant nearby.

“She was driving with five children and a maid when two men on a motorcycle approached the vehicle and opened fire,” he told reporters when met at the scene.

He said the suspects are believed to have fired five shots at the vehicle with one hitting the 32-year-old woman in the neck.

“Her daughter who was sitting next to her was also shot and has been rushed to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for treatment,” he said.

ACP Rusdi said police hope to get a clearer picture of the incident once they acquire footage from the CCTV cameras in the area.

He added that the woman’s body would be sent to the same hospital for a post-mortem.

He said the case has been classified as murder.

“We have yet to establish motive for the murder,” he said, urging anyone with information to contact the police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or visit the nearest police station.

ISIS DECLARE WAR WITH MALAYSIA

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A gun-toting adult is surrounded by children, and a teen standing away from the group is seen cradling an AK-47 assault rifle.

The man is wagging his right index finger back and forth, and talks in a mix of Bahasa Malaysia and what sounded like Arabic.

He expresses gratitude to Allah for "easing our journey and jihad" and for appointing them as "soldiers of Tawhid (The Oneness of God)".

He called out to the authorities of the nusantara (archipelago) - especially in Malaysia and Indonesia.

"Know this ... we are no longer your citizens, and have liberated ourselves from you," he said as the camera panned to show a goateed man nearby holding another Malaysian passport.

"With His permission and His assistance, we will come to you with a military force that you cannot overcome.

"This is Allah's promise to us," he said.

This footage is seen in one of the video clips released by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The man also referred to the toppling of governments and leaders who did not follow Islamic principles to make way for the supremacy of Islam.

Shortly later, he threw his passport into the middle of the circle, and the children followed suit.

A young boy stepped forward with a silver lighter and uttered Bismillah before lighting up a folded piece of white paper.

He then placed it among the pile of documents to set the heap ablaze, a sight which is greeted by raucous cheers and singing from the other children as their fists punched the air.

The scene then moves to a classroom setting, depicting children wearing songkok chanting during religious lessons supervised by an adult, and undergoing combat training under the watchful eyes of another.

They also go through outdoor learning sessions, where a man in a red headwrap conducted quizzes for his young charges.

In another clip of a sandy clearing surrounded by coniferous trees, children stood in line as they fired rounds from semi-automatic pistols.

In a testament to their tender years, their small bodies jerked back from the recoil, with the hems of their oversized camouflage fatigues falling past their knees.

An adult nearby, clad in camel khakis, long-sleeved shirt and a vest, raised his right fist, shouting takbir as the children followed suit with a chorus of Allahu Akbar (God is Great).

Solidarity Walk With Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng

GEORGE TOWN: The national opposition is sensing a snap election after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was charged with graft and abuse of power last Thursday at the Penang High Court.

This feeling was picked up by speakers during a ceramah at the Dewan Sri Pinang today with most alluding to an early 14th General Election.

Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy started the ball rolling when he said morale was high among the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government following victories in the Sarawak state election and the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangasr by-elections.

"The people will decide in the next general election, I feel Penang will remain with Pakatan Harapan (PH)," he said as more than a thousand strong crowd cheered at the Dewan Sri Pinang today.

Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Rashid Hasnon also did not miss a beat when he forecast PH winning 80% of the Penang votes if the election was called.

"We won 52% of the popular vote in 2013," he noted while Parliamentary Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail urged PH supporters to go to the ground to win the fence sitters.

"We can talk to the converted but we need to convince the others," the PKR president said.

Parit Buntar MP and Penang Amanah chairman Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa meanwhile got the crowd roaring in agreement after noting Lim still commanded the support of the public despite facing graft accusations.

"I have seen many who have been charged with corruption and abuse of power and not one of them have been able to raise money from the public for bail," he said.

Lim himself did not discount the possibility of early national polls, saying that the people will have to decide.

"It is up to the people to answer in the next general election," he said when asked in an ad-hoc press conference after
the ceramah.

Earlier in the morning, the commercial district in Lebuh Pantai here reverberated with shouts of "Lim Guan Eng" as thousands gathered for a solidarity walk with the chief minister.

Among those who walked was businesswoman Asma, 46, who said she wanted to show her support for Lim's government.

"There is no need for him to step down," she stressed when asked if Lim needed to take leave until the trial ends.

Another supporter, Khor See Beng, 55, laughed off the accusations.

"I support him as CM, I support his leadership," the voter from the Air Putih constituency, where Lim is assemblyman said.

Also among them was Harnik Kaur, 50, who was with her family of seven from Butterworth.

"We are behind him, we will not let him down," she said.

Police And Public Of Penang

George Town folk started their day this morning with heavier than usual traffic in the city’s streets as police mounted blocks on roads leading to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) state headquarters and the courthouse complex.

According to The Star Online, George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the blocks were set up to ensure a smooth journey for officials sending Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to the Sessions Court to face two corruption charges.

“We are not trying to cause trouble to the people but we have to do that for smooth court proceedings,” he was quoted saying, adding that the number of people allowed into the courthouse would also be monitored by police.

The news portal said thousands were late for work due to the bumper-to-bumper crawl along Jalan Pangkor to Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah before the MACC building and slow traffic on Lebuh Farquhar near the Penang courthouse.

The portal said the blocks affected those heading to several schools in the city such as the Convent Light School, St Xavier’s Institute and SMK Hutchings.

At the courthouse on Light Street, a massive crowd of leaders and supporters gathered since the early morning to show support for Lim.

When Lim’s counsels arrived at about 9am, the crowd swelled to more than several hundred, many milling around the compound as police stopped them from entering the already-packed courtroom.

Lim’s father and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang arrived at about 9.45am to loud cheers from those gathered.

Shortly after, Lim was brought to the complex, earning more cheers.

The Penang chief minister is expected to be charged under Section 23 of the MACC Act and Section 165 of the Penal Code.

Section 23 of the MACC Act covers the offence of using one’s public office or position to obtain gratification for decisions made, while Section 165 of the Penal Code — which was used to convict former Selangor mentri besar Khir Toyo — pertains to the same offence.

He is expected to be charged over the rezoning approval of Magnificent Emblem’s application to convert agricultural land to residential purpose.

He is also expected to be charged over his house purchase, which was allegedly below market value.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali confirmed to Bernama yesterday that he will lead the prosecution team in Lim’s case.

Magnificent Emblem's director Phang Li Khoon, who was also arrested yesterday, is also expected to be charged today.

GEORGE TOWN (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK)- A large crowd gathered outside the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission building in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah where Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is held pending charges of corruption against him.

Many were seen lighting candles, others were singing songs, as the crowd came to show their support for Mr Lim.

There were also shouts of 'Bebas Guan Eng' (Free Guan Eng) and 'Tangkap Jho Lo' (Capture Jho Lo) from the crowd.

High Court set bail at RM1 million for Lim Guan Eng

The High Court set bail at RM1 million for Lim Guan Eng this afternoon after the Penang chief minister claimed trial to two corruption charges.

After his plea was recorded, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, who led the prosecution team, proposed the bail sum and asked that Lim be compelled to inform the court if he planned to travel abroad.

During mitigation, Lim’s lead counsel Gobind Singh Deo requested for the accused to be allowed to inform the court and the AG’s Chambers of this travel plans two days before departure.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Azmi Ariffin granted the request and agreed not to impound Lim’s passport, also setting bail at RM1 million with one surety.

In the case of businesswoman Phang Li Koon, who also claimed trial to her charge, Apandi asked for bail to be set at RM200,00 with one surety and no additional conditions, which the court allowed.

Azmi later fixed September 22 for case management in chambers for both cases.

Lim and Phang are facing charges over an allegedly corrupt house purchase deal they struck last year.

Lim is facing two charges ― one under Section 23 of the MACC Act and another under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

He is accused of using his public office or position to obtain gratification for himself and his wife, Betty Chew, by approving an application by Magnificent Emblem to convert agricultural land to residential purpose during a state planning committee meeting on July 18, 2014.

Section 23 carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and a fine of five times the value of gratification or RM10,000 whichever is higher.

In the Penal Code charge, Lim is alleged to have used his position to obtain gratification by purchasing his house from Phang at RM2.8 million, which was below the property’s market value of RM4.27 million on July 28, 2015.

The second offence is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, and forfeiture of property upon conviction.

Rare Arrest of a sitting Chief Minister on Graft charges

MACC yesterday Electrified the country by making a rare arrest of a sitting chief minister on graft charges.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, a leading opposition figure, was flanked by about a dozen Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officials and plainclothes policemen as he was escorted out of his office, with dozens of journalists swarming the place.

The arrest followed three months of accusations by Umno leaders that Mr Lim had benefited in buying his bungalow on Pinhorn Penang island from businesswoman Phang Li Koon, and that she was allegedly involved in business deals with the Penang state government that he leads.

The 55-year-old is secretary-general of the (DAP), the most popular ethnic Chinese party in Malaysia. The DAP won 38 seats in the federal Parliament in the 2013 General Election, forming the second-largest single bloc of MPs after Umno's 88 seats.
